🌍 Egypt’s Sweet Potato Export Season 2025 – A Promising but Balanced Market

The 2025 Egyptian sweet potato export season began strongly, with early prices outperforming last year’s levels. However, as supply volumes increased and overall market sales slowed, prices have now stabilized — returning to a seasonal equilibrium similar to 2024.

According to Mohamed Moustafa, Sales Executive at Agro Trade Holland (Mahdy Fresh):

“We received our first deliveries back in June. Initially, prices were high and stable; due to volume pressure and sluggish sales, prices are now returning to a seasonal level, almost similar to last year’s.”

This development mirrors the broader European market trend, where Egyptian exporters maintain a steady, reliable presence across key destinations such as the Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

🇪🇬 Egypt’s Leadership in Global Sweet Potato Exports

Egypt continues to be one of the world’s leading exporters of sweet potatoes, supported by:

  • Fertile Nile Delta soil

  • Favorable climate with mild winters

  • Long harvest window (June to February)

  • Proximity to European ports ensuring faster shipping times

Under the premium label Mahdy Fresh, Agro Trade delivers certified, export-grade sweet potatoes to over 30 international markets, serving major retail, wholesale, and foodservice chains.

🌱 Variety Shift – Bellevue Becomes the New Standard

As highlighted in the FreshPlaza feature, cultivation trends in Egypt have shifted significantly. The Bellevue variety now accounts for nearly two-thirds of the total exportable crop, replacing Beauregard in many production zones.

Key reasons for Bellevue’s dominance include:
✅ Deep orange color and uniform shape
✅ High dry matter and sweetness
✅ Extended shelf life and strong skin structure
✅ Better tolerance during long-distance shipping

This evolution aligns perfectly with European buyer preferences for consistency, color, and flavor.

🛒 European Market Preferences

European supermarket chains tend to prefer medium sizes (M, L1) for retail, while wholesale markets and foodservice sectors favor larger sizes (L1, L2, XL).

Agro Trade’s state-of-the-art grading and packing lines ensure precise sorting and quality uniformity, meeting customized requirements for each client — whether retail packaging or bulk shipments.

🔥 Rising Industrial Demand

Sweet potatoes are no longer limited to the fresh market. Demand from industrial processors and restaurant chains continues to rise, especially for:
🍟 Sweet potato fries
🥣 Purees and baby food
🥗 Frozen and ready-to-cook meals

As Moustafa noted in the FreshPlaza interview:

“Sweet potatoes are now gaining popularity not only in the fresh market but also in the industry. More burger chains are adding sweet potato fries to their menus — there’s clear growth potential in both areas.”

This diversification ensures consistent year-round export performance and broader market stability for Egyptian growers.

🚢 Efficient Export Logistics

Egypt’s geographical advantage near European and Gulf markets enables cost-effective and timely logistics.

Main Ports: Alexandria, Damietta, Sokhna
Transit Time to Rotterdam: ~10–12 days
Shipping Mode: Reefer containers with full cold-chain management

Seasonality:
